Paolo Tombolesi ha conseguito i diplomi di Pianoforte, Composizione jazz e Pianoforte jazz presso il Conservatorio di Frosinone studiando sotto la guida, tra gli altri, di Gerardo Iacoucci, Enrico Pieranunzi e Walter Fischetti. Ha seguito corsi e seminari di perfezionamento con Gary Burton, Sal Nistico, Bruno Tommaso, Franco D'Andrea, Mike Melillo, Miroslav Vitous, Alfredo Rodriguez, Harold Danko, Barry Harris e Kenny Barron. Nel 1991 è stato invitato come studente ospite presso la Manhattan School of Music di New York. Nel 1980 segue il seminario di Angelo Fabbrini “Meccanica e accordatura del pianoforte per pianisti” presso il Conservatorio di Perugia (1980).

La sua attività concertistica in ambito jazzistico inizia accompagnando il coro "The New Spiritual Singers", diretto da Gerardo Iacoucci (1981/82) sotto la cui direzione ha anche lavorato dal 1983 al 1992 nella "Modern Big Band", con cui ha avuto modo di suonare tra gli altri con Dusko Gojkovich, Gianni Basso, Jens Søndergaard, Steve Grossman, John Mosca e Paolo Fresu.

Tra il 1983 e il 1984 collabora con il "Blue Quintet" diretto da Alfredo Santoloci, tra il 1987 e il 1989 con il "Kammerton Vocal Ensemble" diretto da Fabrizio Cardosa e negli anni 1989/90 con il gruppo di salsa e latin jazz "Raiz" diretto da Jesus Zeballos.

Nel corso degli anni '80 inoltre si è esibito più volte nell'orchestra di "Segni Jazz", diretta da Bruno Tommaso, in concerti con Gianluigi Trovesi, Danilo Terenzi, Ettore Fioravanti, Enzo Pietropaoli, Maurizio Giammarco e Umberto Fiorentino.

Nello stesso periodo ha svolto un’intensa attività professionale e concertistica nell’ambito della popular music, lavorando come accompagnatore delle prove degli spettacoli del Teatro Sistina (Roma) e accompagnando in tour tra gli altri Luciano Rossi, gli Evergreen, i New Macedonia, Alex Britti, Tiziana Rivale, Aldo Donati e la Schola Cantorum, Rita Pavone, Teddy Reno e Marco Conidi.

Nei primi anni '90 fa parte del quartetto di Daniela Velli ed è tra gli animatori dell'ottetto "Sax Energie" (con Rosario Giuliani, Mauro Verrone, Andrea Polinelli, Massimo Bettazzi, Andrea Pace, Enrico Ghelardi, Giampiero Merluzzi, Giancarlo Guidoni, Stefano Pacioni ed altri).

Nel 1991 forma, insieme a Mauro Verrone, Stefano Cantarano e Maurizio Rizzuto (a cui poi è succeduto Paolo Mappa), il quartetto "Percorsi", un progetto portato avanti fino al 1995, ospitando come guest Maurizio Giammarco.

Dal 1994 al 2003 ha suonato con la cantante Marilena Paradisi in varie formazioni, collaborazione culminata nella registrazione di un CD in quartetto ed una serie di concerti con Piero Leveratto ed Eliot Zigmund.

Nel maggio 2000 ha svolto un tour in Africa con il GASP QUINTEM diretto da Andrea Pace, nel corso del quale ha partecipato all’Harare International Festival of Arts. Nel 2008 lavora come arrangiatore e direttore della Grande Orchestra dell’Associazione Massimo Urbani. Tra i molti altri musicisti che Paolo Tombolesi ha affiancato come "freelance" in studio di registrazione e dal vivo vi sono Massimo Urbani, Bruno Tommaso, Maurizio Giammarco, George Garzone, Mark Murphy, Alvin Batiste, Scott Reeves, Terrell Porter, Jay Rodriguez, Charles Davis, Dino Piana, Tiziana Ghiglioni, John Ramsay, Bob Gullotti e Grant Calvin Weston.

Con il proprio trio, con Gianluca Renzi o Stefano Cantarano al contrabbasso e Alessandro Marzi alla batteria, ha registrato il CD "Unawares", e alcune composizioni originali presenti nel disco sono state incluse nell' ITALIAN JAZZ REAL BOOK (Carish, 2003).

Oltre che in trio e come freelance, svolge attualmente la propria attività concertistica accompagnando il trombonista Marcello Rosa, con il quale ha registrato diversi CD, e con la trombettista Lucia Ianniello, con la quale ha pubblicato due album per l'etichetta inglese SLAM Records, e si è esibito in duo a Bangkok.

Nella sua carriera oltre che in Italia si è esibito in Portogallo, Germania, Svizzera, USA, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Etiopia, Polonia, Svezia e Thailandia.

Oltre alla sua attività musicale è stato vice presidente dell'Associazione Massimo Urbani, ha fatto parte del Consiglio Direttivo dell'AMJ (Associazione Musicisti di Jazz) e successivamente dell'associazione MIDJ (Musicisti Italiani Di Jazz).

Dal 1996 è Direttore artistico della rassegna “Acuto Jazz”, organizzata dal Comune di Acuto.

La sua attività didattica si è svolta principalmente presso: C.I.A.C. (Roma) 1986/1992, Centro Musicale Latina 1988/89, Scuola Comunale di Musica di Orvieto 1989/1998, "Jazz University" di Terni 1990/1992, Scuola Comunale di Musica di Ferentino 1990/92, St. Louis Music Accademy (Roma) 1991/92, Scuola di Musica Neuma (Roma), di cui è stato anche uno dei fondatori ed animatori, dal 1993 al 2010.

Attualmente è titolare della cattedra di Tecniche d'improvvisazione musicale e coordinatore dei corsi di jazz presso il Conservatorio di Musica "Licinio Refice" di Frosinone, e rappresentante dell’Area delle discipline dei nuovi linguaggi nel CNAM (Consiglio Nazionale per l’Alta Formazione Artistica e Musicale).

In the same period he performed an intense professional and concert activity in the popular music field, working as a rehearsal accompanist for the Teatro Sistina (Rome) and accompanying on tour, among others, Luciano Rossi, the Evergreen, the New Macedonia, Alex Britti, Tiziana Rivale, Aldo Donati and the Schola Cantorum, Rita Pavone, Teddy Reno and Marco Conidi.

In the early 1990s it was part of the Daniela Velli's quartet and is among the animators of the octet "Sax Energie" (with Rosario Giuliani, Mauro Verrone, Andrea Polinelli, Massimo Bettazzi, Andrea Pace, Enrico Ghelardi, Giampiero Merluzzi, Giancarlo Guidoni, Stefano Pacioni and others).

In 1991 he formed, together with Mauro Verrone, Stefano Cantarano and Maurizio Rizzuto (later replaced by Paolo Mappa), the "Percorsi" quartet, a project carried out until 1995, hosting Maurizio Giammarco as a guest.

From 1994 to 2003 he played with the singer Marilena Paradisi in various ensembles, a collaboration culminating in recording of a CD and a series of concerts with Piero Leveratto and Eliot Zigmund.

In May 2000 he toured in Africa with the GASP QUINTEM directed by Andrea Pace, playing at the Harare International Festival of Arts. In 2008 he works as arranger and director of the Grande Orchestra dell'Associazione Massimo Urbani.

Among the many other musicians that Paolo Tombolesi has supported as"freelance" in recording studio and live there are Massimo Urbani, Bruno Tommaso, Maurizio Giammarco, George Garzone, Mark Murphy, Alvin Batiste, Scott Reeves, Terrell Porter, Jay Rodriguez, Charles Davis, Dino Piana, Tiziana Ghiglioni, John Ramsay, Bob Gullotti and Grant Calvin Weston.

With his own trio, with Gianluca Renzi or Stefano Cantarano on double bass and Alessandro Marzi on drums, he recorded the CD "Unawares", and some original compositions from the album were published in the ITALIAN JAZZ REAL BOOK (Carish, 2003).

As well as with his trio and how freelance, he currently carries out his own concert activity accompanying the trombonist Marcello Rosa, with whom he recorded several CDs, and with the trumpeter Lucia Ianniello, with whom he released two albums for the English label  SLAM Records, and performed in duo in Bangkok.

In his career he has performed in Italy, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, USA, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Ethiopia, Poland, Sweden and Thailand.

In addition to his musical activity he was vice president of the Massimo Urbani Association, he did part of the Board of Directors of the AMJ (Jazz Musicians Association) and subsequently of the MIDJ association (Italian Jazz Musicians).

Since 1996 he has been the artistic director of the “Acuto Jazz” festival, organized by the Municipality of Acuto.

His teaching activity took place mainly at: C.I.A.C. (Rome) 1986/1992, Centro Musicale Latina 1988/89, Municipal School of Music of Orvieto 1989/1998, "Jazz University" of Terni 1990/1992, Municipal School of Music of Ferentino 1990/92, St. Louis Music Academy (Rome) 1991/92, Neuma School of Music (Rome), of which he was also one of the founders and animators, from 1993 to 2010.

He currently teaches Musical improvisation techniques and is the head of the jazz courses at the "Licinio Refice" Conservatory of Music in Frosinone.

Furthermore it is the representative of the area of ​​disciplines of new musical languages ​​in the CNAM (National Council for Higher Artistic and Musical Education).
